How the IQ Challenge works

Four short missions, each built on a kind of puzzle researchers use to look at one thinking skill. It is a fun estimate, not a clinical or diagnostic test.

The four skills

  • ReasoningSpotting the rule in something new, then using it.
  • MemoryHolding things in mind while you work with them.
  • SpatialTurning shapes over in your head.
  • SpeedWorking quickly and accurately with simple information.

How the estimate is worked out

Each mission adapts as you play: a right answer brings a harder puzzle, a wrong one an easier one. Your answers in each mission are compared with those of other MindFlex players of your age, and the four skills are combined on the familiar IQ scale, where 100 is the middle and most people land between 85 and 115.

BandEstimate
Brilliant Mind130+
Sharp Thinker115–129
Clever Thinker100–114
Steady Thinker85–99
Rising Starbelow 85

Below 85 you see the Rising Star band rather than a number, and above 145 the estimate reads 145+. While an age group has few players, estimates are marked beta: they settle as more people play.

MindFlex Junior (ages 4–6) gives one to three stars per skill and a brain type, never a number.

Official and practice attempts

An official attempt counts on the leaderboard. After one, the next official attempt opens after a cooldown; attempts in between are practice. Practice still gives you a full result, but the leaderboard always keeps your best official one.

Fair play

Everyone with an official result is ranked on their best official attempt, by age group or across all ages: the scale is age-adjusted, so all ages compare.

Your name appears only if you choose to show it. Everyone else is a "Hidden player" with the same rank and score. Turning your name off hides it everywhere at once, including on links you have shared.

Questions

Is this a real IQ test?

No. It is a fun estimate built on the same kinds of puzzles researchers use, scored against other MindFlex players of the same age. It is not a clinical or diagnostic test.

Why do I need an account?

The first mission is free. A free account keeps your progress, gives you your estimate and brain type, and puts you on the leaderboard.

What are official and practice attempts?

An official attempt counts on the leaderboard; the next one opens after a cooldown (My attempts shows the date). Attempts in between are practice: you still get a result, but the board keeps your best official one.

Is my name shown on the leaderboard?

Only if you choose. Everyone with an official result is ranked; players who keep their name private appear as "Hidden player".

What about younger children?

MindFlex Junior is for ages 4–6: three picture games with spoken instructions, results as stars, no number.
